The Rummer Revival

In the 1960s and ’70s, Robert “Bob” Rummer transformed residential design in the Pacific Northwest. Celebrated as one of the region’s most iconic mid-century modern builders, his homes are distinguished by their signature central atriums, sweeping floor-to-ceiling glass, and seamless connection to nature.

Today, these architectural treasures are affectionately known as “Rummers,” have a devoted following and remain some of the most sought-after homes in the region.

Rummer Development is carrying this legacy forward. We’re elevating the Rummer brand for a new era, redefining what modern homebuilding can be, and delivering a high-value, design-driven product to communities across the country.

Robert Rummer Legacy

Robert “Bob” Rummer was a defining figure in Pacific Northwest mid-century modern design, building hundreds of homes in Oregon and Washington between 1959 and 1975. Inspired by California developer Joseph Eichler and encouraged by his wife Phyllis, Rummer adapted Eichler’s principles to suit the region’s climate and lifestyle, creating homes with post-and-beam construction, central atriums, vaulted ceilings, and walls of glass that seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor spaces.

Clusters of Rummer houses can still be found across Portland-area neighborhoods (notably Bohmann Park/Vista Brook, Oak Hills, Beaverton, Lake Oswego and Gresham), and several collections of his homes have attracted preservation interest and devoted mid-century followings. Today “Rummers” are highly prized by enthusiasts and often headline mid-century home tours and restoration projects.
